Family Care Research Project

Many children in care will have experienced a form of abuse or neglect – all will have experienced loss. This can have a material impact on family life with many going through times of crisis and instability.

Our Family Care Research project aims to establish a clearer picture of what meaningful support is already on offer for Christian parents of care-experienced children and to make recommendations of how support could be improved.

The Report

Following a Call for Evidence carried out between March and June 2022, a report has now been published with a summary of findings of the quantitative and qualitative data collected. The online questionnaire gathered responses from 91 Christian parents/carers of care-experienced children. Of these participants, 10 were randomly selected for a semi-structured online interview.

The report offers insights for parents/carers and their supporters and makes recommendations for future research and practice.

You can download the Family Care Report opposite. The report has been structured into sections so you can read the parts that are most relevant to you.

Our thanks to Dr Tim Davy, Head of Research Consultancy at All Nations College, for serving as Research Advisor and Annabel Silson, our Research Assistant.

Peers who have read the report say:

‘This is an amazing big step forward for thinking through what it looks like to care for families with care-experienced children.’

‘What a lot of content and consideration!’

‘It’s got really big implications for practice.’

‘It sounds like you asked good questions and those who participated were comfortable in being honest with their responses.’

Rachel Maclure was our lead researcher, and has been collaborating with other charities and individuals to act on the recommendations in the report. If you would like to get involved or find out more, please email contact us at info@biblicalcounselling.org.uk.

Biblical Counselling raised funds in 2021 specifically to launch Family Care Research. We are thankful for the Lord’s provision of funding for this project. Nearly 80% of the £37,000 target has been raised so far, through the generosity of a small number of donors. It is exciting to see how God is opening doors for this research to be used and, we pray, have a real impact of the lives of Christian families. Would you consider giving to this project to help us raise the remaining funds that are needed? Your support will enable us to complete this valuable work. To make a one-off gift or commit to a monthly sum until the end of the project (August 2023) please contact Tarita Smallwood, our Director of Finance & Development.
